Here is Ramble’s recommended packing list for your camping trip to the Great Sand Dunes
Summer temperatures can vary from 45 degrees to 90 degrees in the day and night. If you’re planning to visit the national park in the warmer months, sand temperatures can get up to 150 degrees, and afternoon thunderstorms are likely to roll in. Make sure to plan accordingly!
- Clothing:
- Comfortable, moisture-wicking clothing for hot and dry weather
- Long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect from sun and sand
- Windbreaker or light jacket for cool evenings
- Swimsuit for swimming in Medano Creek, should you venture out of Ramble campground
- Footwear:
- Hiking boots or closed-toe shoes for hiking on trails
- Sandals or water shoes for wading in Medano Creek
- Sun Protection:
- Sunscreen with high SPF
- Sunglasses
- Hat with wide brim to protect face and neck from sun
- Camping Gear:
- Tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad
- Cookware and utensils
- Cooler for food and drinks
- Headlamp or flashlight
- First aid kit
- Towels
- Rope or para-cord for various purposes
- Duct tape for quick repairs
- Recreation Equipment:
- Daypack for carrying snacks, water, and other essentials
- Binoculars for bird-watching and wildlife spotting
- Camera to capture the stunning views
- Miscellaneous:
- Bug spray! There can be mosquitos after a rainstorm
- Toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, biodegradable soap, etc.)
- Plenty of water (at least 1 gallon per person per day) * Ramble provides potable water at the campground, but we recommend bringing extra
- Snacks and food for your stay
- Cash or credit card for National park entry fees and any additional purchases outside of Ramble
- Trash bags to pack out all trash and leave no trace in the park
